I had a theory about this, It's the fact that the cone in the normal position when it fires outward compresses everything in front of it where if you put the speakers the way your saying when it fires outward the cone sends the waves away from the cone. In other words cut a piece of 3/8 plywood into a small vee shape with the same angle as your cone, then set it in a cookie sheet pan and add about a 1/4 inch of water. Then tap on the point of the cone to replicate the motion of your speaker and you'll see all the waves firing inward and slamming together. now turn the vee around and tunk it in the vee and you'll see the waves moving outward and not colliding.

Whether it's a good idea or not I don't know because I never tried it myself other than in the cookie pan but it's something to ponder. I would have tried it but being the 604's have the HF mounted the way they do It wouldn't really pan out. No pun intended.
